Caithness Camping Pods
Welcome to Caithness Camping Pods. Off grid holidays in the Scottish Highlands. For prices and availability, there is a button at the bottom of the page.
**Due to COVID 19 concerns, we are currently not letting pods individually. When you book a pod, your group gets the exclusive use of two pods, the entire camping pod area and facilities. More details are given below.**
Cairn Of Dunn is a family run permaculture croft near Watten in Caithness, not far from John O Groats. We are midway between Thurso and Wick.
The croft has panoramic views in all directions, and the pods all have stunning views over Loch Watten, the largest loch in Caithness. In winter, our dark skies make it one of the finest stargazing places in the country.
We are not a glamping site. No hot tub, no Wifi, not even electricity. What we offer is the opportunity to completely unplug in peace and tranquility, in one of the most environmentally regenerative holiday destinations in the country. Many sites claim to be sustainable, or green. We believe it’s possible to go far beyond that and be truly regenerative. Please click on the ‘environmental policy’ link in the menu above if you’d like to know more.
Our pods are camping pods. Think of them as an alternative to a tent. Each pod has two wooden, single sleeping platforms. You will need to bring your own sleeping pad or air bed, bedding, cooking gear and camping stove. There is room for a third air bed on the floor for a child should you wish. The pods are double glazed and insulated, but are not heated.
Please note, cooking inside the pods is not allowed due to safety concerns. There is a separate cooking area provided. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
The toilet is a waterless design. It is the Rolls Royce of composting toilets. Forget everything you may have experienced using composting toilets in the past, this is the most environmentally friendly design on the market and completely odourless.
There is a propane heated shower, a washing up area and a cooking area. Please note you will need to provide your own stove and fuel, just like camping.
We have a private customer car park with ample space.
Changes due to COVID 19
For the 2020 season, we are letting the whole unit, complete, to groups. This will give you two camping pods and exclusive use of the facilities. We will clean the toilet and shower areas daily. If you prefer, for example if one or more of your group is shielding, we can supply cleaning materials for you to do this yourselves. You will have exclusive use of the customer car park, the pod area and the track between the two.
These changes will allow your group to isolate completely, should you choose to do so. Caithness being one of the least populated areas of the country, we believe these measures make us one of the safest holiday destinations in the country. Safer for you, safer for us, and safer for our local community.
Once you’ve made your booking, you’ll receive an email detailing how to pay your deposit which must be made by BACS within 24 hours to reserve your dates.
